An individual man is taught to protect his respect, maintain power and take in control of the situation in order to keep his superiority over woman. Men need to make sure that their prestige remains high to keep their preeminence over women. One way man can keep his respect is by doing everything that they promise to do without failing. A man that keeps his words and backs up his words through his activities will make woman respect him. Woman will have more respect for a man that does not fail to back up his words. Getting the respect from woman will help a man to keep his reputation at a higher level than of a woman. Also man has to keep his power by not confessing to his mistake. Man will not face a situation where his masculine status will lose and woman will not offend man’s masculine status. Also man does not want to face humiliation which would make man feel belittle. The author states, “Men may risk social rejection when they express or report a great degree on what are considered traditionally “feminine” characteristics such as strong emotions and intimacy. Men also may be homophobic and fearful of appearing vulnerable or weak” (Gaia, A. C.). The word “feminine” in this context means to display any signs of affection or emotions toward another person. A man’s image and appearance is important to him. Therefore if by showing any emotions or intimate behavior could possibly tarnish their character they will not display this affection because they do not want to be called a homosexual.…

The rules that guys follow sometimes hurt the men that follow them in several ways. It can backfire to the men who aren’t following them and it can put them in a situation they don’t want to be in. As an example, fighting is a way to show other men that they are the dominant one, but if the guy doesn’t respond to his opponent he is considered weak for not returning the hostility. Masculinity is affected by not showing emotions from a young age. Boys are told that showing their feelings is more feminine and the only feeling they can show is anger.…

For example, women do not judge gay men but straight men do. The real reason men try to be masculine, is to show other men that they are real men. This masculinity can sometimes be dangerous for men because they hide their emotions and anything that will make them look weak but it tears them from inside. According to Kimmel, when a football player was asked what he thinks of his coach, he said “he would completely humiliate us for showing anything but toughness” (543). The coaches think that this will make them tougher and better players but it actually wears the players down from not showing anything.…

No one should feel that they have to act a certain way to prove their femininity or masculinity. Toxic masculinity is a norm is our society and does not raise any flags; however, it also creates a disgusting culture that advertises this stigma that men must fulfill their role as ‘the man’ to be counted as one. Little boys are pressured to be a ‘man’ and a man doesn’t enjoy anything that is seen as feminine because doing so would take away their masculinity; and apparently, having and expressing your feelings is a ‘girl thing’. Due to this, boys and men are forced to bottle up all emotions and put on an expressionless steel mask. This eventually leads to them becoming more explosive.…

What does it mean to be a man or a woman? Many people think that being a man means to not cry, never show any fear, be strong, and never show your feelings. Society is prejudicing men by setting certain standards that they must live up to, to be accepted by others. In the article “The Causes of Prejudice”, Vincent N. Parrillo defines prejudicial attitude as either negative or positive. Since only negative attitudes lead to violent social relations, many people define prejudice as “system of negative beliefs, feelings, and action-orientations regarding a certain group or groups of people”.…

Knowing that an erection does not mean a man is sexually aroused should help show that men are not consenting silently. Women have also reported releasing vaginal fluids during sexual assault. (Judson) Having problems with intimacy and self-esteem are similar effects of sexual abuse to women also. (Tewskbury) When women are assaulted by other women or men they receive the same amount of empathy whether they were attracted to either.…

Challenges to pride and thoughts of incapability are not just issues for women. For instance, some men believe they are not allowed to cry. They feel as though it is a blow to their masculinity and promotes weakness. For other men, the thought of crying can be utterly terrifying, because they are afraid they will be judged for it. The reason for that is a stereotype men face saying how they must be the stronger sex and practically exert a sense of manliness in everything they do.…

It’s impossible to create a list that makes a man and that it characterize every man. When there are rules or requirements it causes tension between groups in which would lead to conflict. To support the men in this community is to be themselves, that is it. But that is hard to do because men and women have been taught to act some certain ways to be considered men or women. People in general, male or female, should be more open minded to others and not judge people on their appearance.…

Having men be portrayed this way has brought women to believe that for men to be considered as real men they have to know how to fix any kind of stuff. If they couldn’t do this, they would not be real men. In my experience I am the kind of person who does not have the ability to repair things well. I try my best to fix the problem, but I end up not repairing it well. I feel that me not being able to fix things does not make me any less of a man than what I am.…
