In the story both men and women were asked to play a game to test their self control. Have you ever played a game that you didn’t really know what was happening? The characters of the story ‘The Dinner Party’ by Mona Gardner didn’t really know what was going on. They thought they were just playing a normal game but they were saving themselves from the cobra. There are twenty people in this game but the main characters of the story is a Colonial Official and his wife, the Colonel, the Americans, and Mr. Wynnes. The setting is in India during a dinner party. In the beginning there was a spirited discussion that springed up between a girl and the Colonel. Both the American and Mrs. Wynnes knew that there was a cobra who was an uninvited guest at the dinner party. They both reacted very calmly to the situation and found a way to solve it without alerting anyone. It proved that they had self control because they weren’t afraid of the cobra. Each person found out how much self control they really have in a different way.
How Mrs. Wynnes reacted to the cobra showed how much self control she had. It was across Mrs. Wynnes foot and instead of screaming, as the colonel insisted, she instead asked for a bowl of milk. It proved that she had self control because she didn’t freak. It is important because it showed her emotions. Other people reacted differently to this situation.
Men and women both have same self control even though men said that they had more self control than women.The American came up with a game to save everyone. He knew that bowl of milk was a bait for a cobra and sensed that there was one in the room. The game helped everyone to stay still and to prove that he had self-control. Everyone at the table was able to have control and then at the end it saved them. This showed how much control both men and women have when they are in danger. They were scared of the cobra. But at the end everyone was ok thanks to the game made by the American and everyone had the same self
