Deborah Tannen discusses these feelings in her writing I’m Sorry I won’t Apologize. One difference between women and men is that some men fear admitting fault. While many women will quickly apologize when they are at fault, many men have difficulties admitting and apologizing for their actions. Women also tend to feel guilt more than men do, which is why they are quicker to apologize. Sometimes when one apologizes, they do not truly mean it. Apologies should be noticeable in the face and in the voice. Occasionally, men have trouble expressing their true feelings, which could be why their apologies may seem less sympathetic than one from a woman. The article mentions that apologies are a sign of weakness. Stereotypically, are strong and do not show weaknesses. Since men aspire to appear as the stronger and dominant sex, they avoid situations and actions that may portray them as being weak. An example of this being men wanting to appear as being humorous and tough while women tend to be sweet and innocent.
