Memory Loss In Finding Nemo

Improved Essays
In the in the animated classic Finding Nemo, Dory stumbles through life having no idea what she is doing or was doing. Plagued with short term memory loss, Dory offers a unique view on the story's problem. First of all, Dory is often at a loss at what she was just recently doing. This can lead to some strange situations, such as when she just found Marlin, showing him where the boat that took Nemo went when her affliction acts up. She completely forgets what she was doing, and starts to harass Marlin for following her. Then, after Marlin explains himself and his situation, Dory realizes what happened, “I did? Oh dear...No, it's not. I know it's not. I'm so sorry. See, I suffer from short-term memory loss.” (Stanton, Unkrich x:xx)She has had …show more content…
Also, Dory often ends up helping people without actually knowing why she is or who she is looking for. For example, near the end of the movie she finds Nemo, “I don't know where I am... I don't know what's going on. I think I lost somebody but I, I can't remember... and I can't remember…”(Stanton, Unkrich x:xx) but can't remember who she is looking for. Luckily for her, her happy-go-lucky attitude allows her to do a complete turn around and start looking for Nemo’s dad. Lastly, Dory often adapts a “can do” attitude in everything she does. For example, when Marlin and Dory are swallowed by a whale Dory decides, “Wow. A whale. You know I speak whale.”(Stanton, Unkrich x:xx) that she knows how to speak whale and attempts to communicate with a 39 ton gray whale. Fortuitously for Dory, she has a personality with which she can do whatever she wants to. With this personality, she leads a completely carefree life that would be fantastic . . . but, because of her affliction it doesn't sound so nice. In conclusion, directors Stanton and Unkrich give Dory an amusing yet helpful role in the adventure as well as a wacky personality viewers gravitate
