In The Giver the two themes of the story build on each other by showing the importance of each other. In the beginning of The Giver the idea of memories and individuality are foreign concepts to Jonas and everyone in the society. As Jonas spends more time with The Giver, he learns about memories of the past and starts to develop as a character. As he receives these memories he understands just how conformed his society is and wishes he could change this. Memories in The Giver are what make you individual, in a society where drugs are used to suppress feelings and emotions they've traded freedom and memories for safeness and routine. This provides the main driving point for the book as Jonas learns about the past and his present he becomes bitter.
