“Jonas felt himself losing consciousness
In The Giver Jonas’ life is transformed throughout the book by learning the real truth about the community and that prompts him to leave the community. For instances, when jonas received his first memory of snow and a sled when The Giver was done transferring the memory, Jonas asks “Why don’t we have snow, and sleds, and hills?”(104 Lowry). The Giver told him it was because of climate control. Snow made growing food difficult, limited the agricultural…
In Lois Lowry’s engaging novel The Giver, we meet a young boy named Jonas who lives in a restricted community where everything is planned out perfectly, when Jonas turns twelve his world is turned upside down when he receives the job, the Receiver Of Memory. As entitled Jonas receives memories and this changes his life forever, he receives memories of joy and pain, this drastic change shows Jonas what him and the community had missed out on for so long. “ Life is meaningless without memories” memories provide joy, pain, and resilience and provide individuality so life with no memories would truly be, meaningless.…
Jonas and The Giver watched the release of a new child and found out that they actually killed the babies. As time went by, Jonas decided to run away from the community. Jonas took Gabe with him because Gabe was too little to live in the community and was going to be released. Jonas stole his father’s bicycle and put Gabe in his harness and ran away from the community. Gabe started to fuss a lot on the journey so Jonas transferred memories of calm beaches and sunrises.…
“Don’t be sorry for the truth. A harsh truth is less damaging than a tender lie, and the worst lies are the ones we tell ourselves.” In the story, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and the article, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, both main characters are poised as hero’s. In The Giver, Jonas is selected as the receiver of memory. After many months of training, Jonas’s realizes that there is more beyond what he has learned in his community.…
This essay discusses Jonas’s decisions and why people should support it. In Lois Lowry’s book, The Giver, Jonas decides to leave the safety of the community to allow Gabriel to live, to allow the memories to return to the community, for Jonas to live a meaningful life and for the Giver to have a second chance at helping the community at a time of distress when Jonas’s memories return to the people. Jonas’s decision was the preferred one. How and why is releasing Jonas’s memories to the community better than not releasing the memories to the community?…
Dozing off Jonas slaps himself back into consciousness. Not knowing the soft snow became into rough ice. Jonas remembered the memory of pain when he went down rough ice. He lost control of the sled and received the same pain as in the memory. He sat there with a broken arm pleading for help.…
You and I wouldn’t have to bear so much by ourselves, if everybody took part “(146). The Giver and Jonas have always had troubles with holding memories and with receiving them. All the different thing that Jonas never knew about and not letting the community know about the different thing. For example, “The life where nothing was ever unexpected. Or inconvenient.…
At one training session Jonas asks the Giver what his favorite memory is. The Giver responds by showing Jonas a memory of a family at Christmas with a fire and love. “‘I liked the feeling of love,’ he confessed. He glanced nervously at the speaker on the wall, reassuring himself that no one was listening ‘I wish we still had that,’”(p.126). Jonas liked the feeling of love, but thought it was a dangerous way to live.…
“It’s like going downhill through deep snow on a sled” he said, finally “At first its exhilarating: the speed, the sharp, clean air, but then the snow accumulates, builds up on the runners, and you slow, you have to push hard to keep going, and-”This shows how much The Giver loves the memories and why he…
A memory of hope. He kept this one for himself not transmitting it to Gabriel. He felt less hungry, less tired, less sore and ready to walk as far as he could to save Gabriel. The memory lingered longer than most of the memories he had before. Jonas got up and hugged the newchild just to keep him alive long enough.…
While reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, I think there is a large amount of symbolism in it and it can be taken many different ways, especially the ending. In my interpretation, I believe that Jonas and Gabe perish in the elements. However, I don't think that it is necesarily a sad ending, it is bittersweet. By sacrificing their lives, perhaps the community learns to love, feel pain and happiness, and accept differences. In addition, Jonas remembers all of the happy memories of his friends and family before sliding down the (imaginary?)…
Memories have helped shape the main character Jonas throughout the entire book. In The Giver, memories are vital to give individuals wisdom and experience. Individuals gain wisdom through memories. The Giver and Jonas talk about why receivers are important and the giver argues to him that they provide wisdom to the community so they can make the best decision possible. “ I used my wisdom from the memories”(page 141).…
Once The Giver starts giving Jonas memories, Jonas wishes things could be the way they used to be, where there is not sameness, where they have snow, rain, sunshine, hills, holidays. Therefor he leaves the community so that they can have the memories of how it used to be,…
In the book Jonas is trained to handle the painful memories he will have to overcome. On accident, the Giver gives him the memory of war. He is terrified after receiving the memory. According to the text, Page 114, it states, “The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. “Forgive me,” he said.”…
The theme of The Giver is the significance of memory to human life. The author, Lowis Lowry decided to write this book after her visit to her aging father who had lost most of his memories. She learns that human beings cannot feel pleasure if they do not know the pain. The members of the society are not terrified of death because the life is not precious for them. Jonas thinks that death is not tragic at the beginning of the story.…
