Memorials are meant to remind, meaning there must be an audience. In order for a memorial to fulfill its intended purpose it must be placed, "where the imagined community actually materializes."(Source A) The memorial becomes part of the community and should be placed in a location exposed to the community. Location of a memorial should be a considered as a place that is frequented and available for an audience to visit, while factoring to pay tribute to the event or person. Somewhere the community will see the memorial, ultimately factoring on the impact of the message. The more people aware of the memorial, the more meaning the memorial has in consequence to the location. A Memorial by definition means, to remember or preserve a message, which factors in making a memorial relevant throughout time. It doesn't matter that a memorial is made, what matters is the message which is being expressed. The reason why a memorial is made is to remember a certain event or person. Through this form of tribute, a message can reach not just the present generation but the ones that come after. To insure that a message can exist beyond the present time, it is important to consider the why and the who. Why does this need to be remembered? This question allows for the discovery of the message, which is the reason why the memorial is being created. Who will this effect? In other words, what group of people will be remembered because of the memorial. Facts are important in this process as to honor the history of the people closely connected to the memorial. This is the history of a culture. It should never be, "close to graffiti."(Source C) Memorials are not intended to offend the group which is being honored. Memorials can have more than one message, however there must be an intention or purpose that factors into the creation of a memorial.
