Memorial Dormitory: A Short Story

Improved Essays
As I open the soft, yellow curtains and walk into my room, the strong scent of sweaty clothes and stale food overwhelm me. There are filthy sports clothes piled up in the corner. Dirty socks, muddy cleats and wrinkled blazers are strewn across the floor. Leftover chips, half-emptied coke cans and empty candy packs lie on top of one of the desks. The smell of everything combined is haunting and terrible. A laptop is left open on the bed, showing a YouTube video. The sound of the movie video roars like an airplane taking off. Despite the smell of the clothes, untidiness and loud noises, I appreciate every feature of this place. It might not be obvious to you, but this place was my room in the Memorial Dormitory. It was the place where I have …show more content…
Although it was spacious, the room felt crowded and the furniture was positioned in a way that did not allow for easy movement. After the first day, I began to realize that I should rearrange the layout of this room. I come from an architect family. Three generations from both sides of my family are architects. I love to become an architect someday too. So I thought that I should design my own version of the room. I spent hours measuring and drawing a sketch of the room. Our beds and desks were arranged so that there was more space and privacy in our room. My room, after being revised was just completely out of this world. My roommate and I were very satisfied with our newly arranged room. We would hang our country flags on the wall to demonstrate our pride. Whenever I thought about the room, I will always consider it as my first architectural design.
In this dormitory, I have found another family that was not a blood relative to me. Especially in my room, my roommate Galym was like a brother to me. On move-in day of 2013, I crossed paths with Galym. We have been very good friends since then. We both shared a common hobby of watching TV-shows and YouTube videos. Short-20 minutes TV shows and funny “Honest Trailers” videos brought me inner peace whenever I felt stressed. Galym helped me in Transitional English and in return, I assisted him in Geometry. He was a great roommate and I loved hanging out with him in my

Room 0742 is a studio design room located in king pavilion at the Iowa State University college of design. In a way it represents the beginning of my journey at Iowa State, for it is the first class room I had ever been in as a student, and its represents hours and hours of hard work and dedication to my major. It is a rather bittersweet place with times where it became a place to put my work on display as well as a place to spend many long nights and very early mornings working and developing. The space itself physically is not a room by traditional means it has no doors and stall like walls that rise above the ground six to eight inches as well as an opening at the top.…

Saying by to Momma Skitles and Daddy Spree, I walked into my new sanitized room. After looking around, I decided to take the bottom of the bunk bed in the far corner. “Better to have one close to the ground and near the closet.” I started making my bed when I got another sudden hunger pang. I doubled over as the intensity of my hunger overtook me.…

As I walked down the hallway of the Memorial Union, I search for the staircase that will bring me to my haven for the next hour and a half. After I expressed worry to my friend that I would have nowhere to go during my long class breaks, she told me that Sparky’s Den is where she goes to hang out between classes. As I descended down the gray staircase, I pictured what the room would look like; with a name like Sparky’s Den, I saw a crowded room with dark brown wooden paneling on the walls, dim lighting, red, plush booths lining the walls, and gives off a sports bar atmosphere; you can imagine my surprise when I reached the bottom of the stairs and looked into a bland, white room with light brown finishes lining the walls with thirty-or-so tables and booths, and two long couches. As I walked through the opening in the room, I was hit with a cool blast of air. While the Memorial Union was cool, it was no match to the artic breeze of Sparky’s Den; as the cold air hit me, goosebumps rose all over my body.…

Dainty snowflakes dusted my shoulders as I darted across the open courtyard. Yawning from a hard day’s work, I quietly knocked on the studio door. It was 25 years ago I first time designed a furniture set for a 100 ft2 bedroom. I draw floor plans for the room, furniture draft for workers, which includes storage bed, night stand, closet, desk and a chest with 5 drawers by hand. I still remember the stunned faces while my friends first time visit my home in China, 15 years ago, by seeing my open kitchen, glass wall separator and crimson couches in front a green wall. 7 years ago, I immigrated to Canada. I was more than happy to live in a house, which meant I had more space to design, to decorate.…
