Memorial Day

Decent Essays
Today May 27th 2016. Memorial Day is a very sacred time. It is a time to remember those of our nation that has paid the supreme sacrifice and have gone on before to victories that have made freedom one with a high price tag. It is also a time that we visit many of the resting places of our loved ones that have passed on before us. Many of those of previous years go back to my childhood memory. I remember as a boy, taking a team and wagon to get a great uncle that came home on a train from Missouri to his resting place. That has been over 60 years ago, but I can still walk to the spot. Many of those years, we would put cut flowers in a vase and I remember Dad and Mon taking sickles and trimming up the spaces leaving those cut flowers in glass

America is the land of the free, because of the brave. Americans enjoy many freedoms because of the democracy our ancestors fought very hard to establish. Freedom summarizes what being an American is about, but it’s not what an American is. An American is someone who is brave enough to do something even though the punishment is severe, someone who sees opportunity and stops at nothing to achieve it, and someone who doesn’t take the easy way out. Bravery is part of the definition of an American.…

*National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day* Today is _National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day_. While he was in office, President Ronald Reagan designated October 1988 as _Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month_, which he began to remember pregnancy loss and infant death including, but not limited to, miscarriage, still birth, SIDS or the death of a newborn. Prior to social media, I never knew that such a day/month of remembrance existed, but I remember and often think about the two babies we lost to miscarriages in 1995 and 1996. I think about them in relation to the other young adults in our family and at the Kingdom Hall, and I wonder whether they were boys or girls, what they would have looked like, and what kind of personalities they would have had.…

Last November, a week before Thanksgiving, I was listening to the morning radio talk show The Woody Show and the hosts were talking about how excited they were for the Thanksgiving feast. They all went around and shared what was their perfect meal for that day. It ranged from fried turkey, to stuffing, cornbread, green bean casserole, and towards the end the hosts argued about cranberry sauce. However, they all agreed that pumpkin pie was essential to the perfect meal. I found it very interesting that while they argued about the way the meal was executed, they all agreed on the basic components to the meal-I didn’t.…
