Ten years of education, countless opportunities, and only one time being first. By the time students reach high school, most of them have already earned multiple awards whether it is: perfect attendance, all A or A/B honor roll, a perfect score, or simply a good behavior award. I reached high school with nothing. I have never had perfect attendance, nor a perfect score, and I also never behaved well enough to receive any type of good behavior award. I never seemed to think, no matter how hard I tried, I was ever good or going to be good enough to earn an award. When my junior year started, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I was more realistic. I believed that I did not place, and I cheered on my friends who continued babbling about how well they did. The next day we patiently waited to find out our results. We placed first in quiz bowl which brought all of our confidence up. Finally, the words “Automotive Service & Diagnostics” were voiced and 3rd place was a friend in my group, Alexis, who rebuilt his engine the previous semester in class. 2nd place was some random kid from up north, and finally as we all cheered on Alexis “1st place Martin Villarreal” came, my whole group looked at each other in surprise and excitement as each of them congratulated me. Immediately after receiving my award with Alexis, I called my parents, whom to much of my disappointment did not seem to care, however my girlfriend bombarded my phone with congratulations.
