As a person’s capacity to safely drive diminishes, a lack of mobility can lead to lower quality of life and health (ITE Journal, 2013). Social isolation can occur when they are unable to interact with their friends and family. The inability to access medical services or shop for themselves can lead to deterioration of physical and emotional health. Autonomous vehicles will be able to address these areas and improve one’s quality of life.
For those with disabilities, the reasons that may keep them from driving may limit their use of public transportation. Also, for those who live in more rural areas, the public transportation system may be unable to take them where they need to go.
