In the past, sculpture was a way of recording history, stones were material available for people to carve and express themselves in the form of art. This is evident from the two statues I will be discussing in this essay. The statue of Memi and Sabu which dated back to the ca. 2575–2465 B.C was found “From Egypt; Probably from Memphite Region, Giza, Western Cemetery”. (Metmesuem, 2017). The statue of Gudea which date back to ca. 2090 was from “Mesopotamia, probably from Girsu (modern Tello)B.C”.(Metmesuem,2017). Both statues are stone sculptures.

This artwork represents a leader of profound respect from his people.
“This sculpture belongs to a series of diorite statues commissioned by Gudea, who devoted his energies to rebuilding the great temples of Lagash and installing statues of himself in them.” (Metmesuem, 2017). The details shown in this piece proves that he played a significant role in improving the kingdom of Lagash. This can be noted through the print on his cloths and the sitting of the statue (kept in the temples he built), the seat which Gudea sits on was made so that his feet were elevated from the ground. (Metmesuem,2017). He is wearing a cap showing that he is respected; he is also siting in a formal position with his legs not touching or crossing each other. From the position of his hands it is seen that he is ready to talk to his people and lead them in religious activities too. Unlike the statue of Memi and Sabu, this statue was important right from the time it was made. It was a way of keeping record of things the leader has done and was made sacred for his

In the cycles of the art world, artistic styles progress over time and new innovative techniques embody an era, but the past periods never truly fade from the mind of the artist, hence periods like the Renaissance, a rebirth of an older era of art. However this retrospective obsession with art can meddle up an art history timeline if a statue is not properly dated to the correct era. This is case the regarding the Piombino Apollo, a statue found at sea in 1832 with a complex history of study where it eventually made its way to the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. The statue looks extremely archaic, like a kouros, but some more advanced stylistic evidence on the statue contradict the earlier claim regarding an archaic date and places it in a later Hellenistic one.…

It was created in 1982. The sculpture itself is interesting in its shape the objects used to make the sculpture outside of being bent or stretched have remained in mostly their original form. The sculpture itself also sticks out among the other works of art due to its near humanoid shape. Also, due to the features that makes up the sculpture it portrays a female. This sculpture addresses themes of labor, culture, and conflict.…

On the other hand, the other image depicting the placement of the sculpture portrays the actual meaning behind the creation of the sculpture. The most fascinating thing about art is the difference and diversity between works of art. The drastic uniqueness of arts between periods is something that is interesting to look at because one gets to see how much changes can be made due to cultural influences and time. After visiting the Met and seeing the works of art in person, I have chosen the Statute of Dionysus Leaning On A Female Figure and the Standing Buddha Offering Protection to explore in depth. The Standing Buddha Offering Protection is an Indian sculpture made during the late 5th century. It is only 85.5cm tall and it is constructed out of red sandstone.…
