Throughout Memento, the shifting between multiple point of views, shapes and drastically changes our perception of Leonard, Natalie and Teddy. There are two types of scenes in Memento. There are the black and white scenes, which are shown in chronological order and the color scenes which are shown in reverse order, eventually meet up chronologically with the black and white scenes. The black and white scenes are objective, the audience and Leonard can see all the facts and they are not influenced by Leonard’s emotions or opinions. The color scenes are subjective, they are from Leonard’s perspective and we are denied the same information Leonard is denied during these scenes.

This helps to strengthen the legitimacy of Teddy being the real John G. but towards the end of the film, it solidifies him as a serial killer. There also few establishing shots which compliments the fact that Leonard would not recognize any of the places. The first black and white scene cuts from Leonard in the basement to Leonard in his hotel room. The close ups and point of view shots show Leonard’s general confusion in his setting which shows the legitimacy of his condition while also allowing the audience to see what life is like for him. At this point in the film, we have no reason to think that what he believes is false. During the color sequence there is an establishing shot of the house, which we saw Teddy murdered in. Shortly after they walk into the house we see Leonard look at a picture of Teddy saying to kill him. During the fight we see an over the shoulder shot of Leonard holding the gun against Teddys face which shows his dominance and control. These shots lead us to believe that Leonard has killed the right John G.
Throughout Memento there were several factors that changed the audience’s perception of the characters, especially Leonard. While the mise en scene and cinematography initially made the audience feel bad for Leonard, it later had the opposite effect. The tattoos and photos played a huge role in the change of perception as later in the film we see Leonard altering them to help him forget certain things.
