In this experiment one, are determining the melting points of different crystalline substances following a specific procedure. By finding the melting point of a crystalline substance, it helps determine what kind of compound it is as well as initiate the purity. A DigiMelt apparatus can be used to determine the melting point where a small amount of the the substance is packed into a capillary tube and heated slowly in the apparatus which includes a thermometer, a heating coil and a magnifying eyepiece for observing the substance. The two temperatures that need to be noted down is the first point at which liquid is formed on the crystalline substance, and second the point at which the crystalline substance turn into a clear liquid. The 50-50 Mixture was the first substance that started to melt sharply. Its melting point started at 98.7 ͒C and ended at 101.5 ͒C where it was completely liquefied. This substance out of all three took the slowest to become a liquid. Urea was the second substance that started to melt at 133.3 ͒C and ended at 133.5 ͒C. Right after Urea was completely a liquid, Trans-Cinnamic acid began its melting point at 133.5 ͒C and ended at
134.2͒ C. Both Urea and Trans-Cinnamic acid took a while to begin the melting point process as well as ended their melting points very rapidly and very close to each other. In Part 2 of the lab, we had to determine the melting point of our unknown sample, Unknown #6. Unknown #6 started its melting point at 132 ͒C and rapidly ended at 133͒C. The melting point range determined that the Unknown sample #6 is Urea. To determine the accuracy of the sample, I recorded the melting points of three substances : Unknown #6, 50-50 Mixture; includes .5 of the Unknown #6 and .5 of Urea, and Urea. Unknown #6 melted the same way as before, starting at 132͒ C and ending at 133͒ C. The 50-50 Mixture started its melting point at 132͒ C and ended at 133.2 ͒C. To establish that the Unknown sample #6 is Urea, I as well found the melting point range for Urea. Urea started its melting point at 132 ͒C and ended at 133 ͒C. Throughout
