Melinda's Room In Speak By Laurie Halse Anderson

I chose to create a floor plan of Melinda’s bedroom because she was the main character, and I felt that the setting was an important part of the book. Although the author of Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson, didn’t give readers a complete description of what Melinda’s bedroom looked like, I made some mental pictures of what I thought her bedroom and some of the decorations looked like.
Melinda was described as a very creative girl who was very artistic. Her best grade on her report card was in art class, and it also seemed to be her favorite class. This made me feel that she expressed herself within her room and I picture her room with a lot of art on the wall. In the book, it mentioned how one of her old friends decorated her room, so Melinda’s

Her floor is all wood with a couple of small rugs. She has a big window next to her bed and a smaller window across the room. Her bed is set up next to the big window because a lot of natural light comes in through this window. The quilt on her bed is white with a navy blue stripe, and there is a small decorative pillow that has pink polka dots on it. Next to her dresser is a tall mirror and a big chair. She has a tv on the wall above her dresser. Melinda has a few replicas of her favorite famous paintings on the wall above her bed. On the other walls, there are many canvases with quotes painted on them. Melinda has a few picture frames with pictures of her and other people. There is one of her with her parents and another with Heather. Melinda used the picture with Heather to replace the picture of her and her ex-friends Rachel, Ivy, and Nicole. Since she spends a lot of her free time in her bedroom, Melinda is always adding more personalized …show more content…
She really enjoys art, so she has turned this into a miniature art studio where she can draw or paint. There is a desk with drawers full of her art supplies. This section of Melinda’s room was influenced from the janitor’s closet at school. The janitor’s closet was where Melinda would go when she didn’t want to be around people. She spent so much time in this janitor’s closet that she started to decorate it and make it her own. Melinda’s corner has the same feel to it as the closet. She decorated it with many bright colors to make herself happier. As mentioned before, Melinda was very good at art. This desk gives her a spot to express her feelings and draw. This section is very comfortable, and it is a place where Melinda can relax. Art was the one class where Melinda was able to not think about the awful summer incident that made everyone hate her. She has this area to have the same idea as art class, but instead it’s in her bedroom. There are two pink bean bags next to a small table in one corner and another chair on top of a small rug in the other corner. The rug has multiple different colored stripes going across it which adds color to her corner. She even has a fireplace in between the bean bag chairs and the chair on the

While certain symptoms of illness are less often overlooked, this is not always the case. An almost tragic example of this is portrayed by Charlotte Perkins in her story “The Yellow Wallpaper.” This eye-opening short story utilizes irony to present the narrator’s delusional state of mind, where as her husband, amongst the other characters, does not realize the fate of the narrator after her misdiagnosis. The issue that is more surprising than the depression and insanity seen in this story are the attitudes of the other characters. The narrator’s insanity is caused by her husband, the treatment prescribed to her, and her obsession with the wallpaper.…

The room is depicted as a spontaneous art workshop with “splotches of paint on the ground.” The room also has drawings on the wall of “tormented teenagers and fat puppies,” resulting in a lot of emotion and inspiration in the room. The room is on one end of the building and has sunshine shining through it with music on creating a relaxing setting. The “rest cure” is a treatment for nervous disorders that consists of time that is spent isolated or in complete rest without any activity. In the beginning of the story, the narrator seems sane although somewhat depressed, but as the story goes on she becomes increasingly unstable. The story begins with the narrator and her husband, John, renting a stately manor.…

There are many characteristics that are described in the room which are personified through her. For example, she describes the color to be that of an extraordinarily irritating kind saying “The color is repellant, almost revolting; a smoldering unclean yellow” (Gilman 649), when yellow is described in such a manner, it is closely related to sickness. Just as the room is “sick” physically she is sick mentally. As she begins to study the wallpaper she starts to notice things. She sees that there is a focal pattern and that is is similar to bars, and that there is a sub-pattern, which seem to make out strangled heads from trying to break free from the focal pattern and a moving pattern with the figure of a woman.…

Once she got into high school, Kaci spent less time in the crazy, messy art room and spent more time in the stinky, smelly gym.
