Words are used to express many feelings and bold messages; they can call people to action, bring them to tears, and even drive their adrenaline to act upon them. While words may only be a vibration of vocal chords, they ring out in a harmonious way that compels others to listen. Many historical people, such as Martin Luther King and John F. Hi Nadja, I think today it's hard to imagine a time when the Executive Branch was second in command to Congress, but based on what we learned in the last section, that seems to be what the framers had intended. Remember how it was still fresh in their minds that they had emerged from under a monarchy and they intended to never experience that again? Also, that many delegates refused to attend the Constitutional Convention? That was because they had no desire for a centralized government, and as representatives of their state they knew that was not what the people wanted either. The first line repeats the phrase “and talks” to allow the reader to experience the exasperation of the character. By being repetitive the author places the reader in Estrella’s state of mind, forcing them to experience her exhaustion at repeating herself again and again. Viramontes then takes it further by ending the statement with a simple line that creates a sense of anger within the reader. The reader, who has just been exasperated through repetition is now let down because that repetition led them to nothing more than a simple statement that left them with an air of insignificance. Florence Kelley was a strong and influential leader during the Women’s Civil Rights movement; she spoke at the National American Women’s Suffrage Association in 1905 to persuade in favor of change for the greater and common good.
