Melinda Sordino Character Analysis

The protagonist Melinda Sordino shows growth and uses characterization to reveal her emotional growth. Many teenagers struggle with depression. Melinda’s characterization declines and then improves. Melinda’s characterization when she is speaking up shows her taking action. Melinda shows growth toward the end of the book. She tells her art teacher what happened to her at the party this summer. The characters in the book are Melinda Sordino, the protagonist, Heather, her friend, and Andy. Laurie Halse Anderson uses literary elements such as characterization in order to reveal the protagonist’s emotional growth throughout the novel.

Towards the beginning of the book, Melinda thinks she changed from two months ago. In this quote the narrator and protagonist Melinda Sordino is thinking about her past. She use to be like Heather. “I used to be like Heather. Have I changed that much in two months?” (Anderson 24) This quote means that Melinda thinks she was like Heather two months ago, now she changed. In this quote the narrator and protagonist Melinda Sordino is sharing with the reader her thoughts about herself. “… ‘ I am sure I was a huge disappointment. I’m not pretty or smart or athletic. I’m just like them- an ordinary drone dressed in secrets and lies” (Anderson 70). This quote reveals that her feelings are hurt and that she is independent. She thinks bad about herself. At this moment Melinda is telling about herself and how she is related to her parents. The passage is written this way to show that she is alone and how she thinks about herself. Melinda’s mental/emotional state is declining because she feels bad. She currently did’nt want to have interest upon herself. She thinks she is dressed in lies just like her
