Melina Vasques: A Case Study

Improved Essays
It is my concern that one of our valued employees, Melina Vasques, has been going through personal issues. Her performance has always been excellent, and recently her performance has declined. It has come to my attention that she has lost her spouse last week in a sudden car crash, which has resulted in her lack of motivation. The article states, “Bereavement leave is paid leave that allows an employee time off to deal with their personal distress and related practical arrangements, primarily, but not limited to, when a member of their family dies” (acas.org, 2014). The authors discussed many different practices the counselor uses to benefit the individual. One benefit in grief counseling they stated was, “focus on grief, rather than broad psychiatric symptoms”(Altmaler, 2011). This is important because grief is a specific issue, and grief counselors only focus on grief. Melina should seek counseling, and more specifically grief counseling. Allowing paid leave for Melina, will most likely motivate her into seeking counseling. Each article believes that it is important for an individual to take time off from work to grieve, and also it is beneficial to seek

There are ways of handling this case differently from employer and employee. Let's start with the hiring phase: 1. The employer did not ask the candidate any questions about his ability to perform the job (asking questions can help you decide if the candidate is fit for the job). 2. The employer failed to ask if there are any issues with the availability to attend these days/hours and mandatory meetings (Addressing the issues of hours and days during interviews will cause fewer problems during their time at the company).…

From a management standpoint, the ethical decisions made could have been refined and the treatment of Lydia's problem been handled in a professional matter. The administrative body has multiple responsibilities to all of the invested stakeholders, including Lydia. Although management covered their ethical responsibilities to the community, it appears as though there was a lapse in the ethical, fair, and moral treatment of Lydia herself. Even through the process of follow-up communication with Lydia, the management agents could have fulfilled their obligation to treat Lydia with virtue and demonstrated a strength of character. All management and administrative practices of ethical conduct seem geared toward the treatment of two separate concerns:…

Each of the dictionary definitions and those found in literature searches show similarities such as the identification of a sympathetic response to another person or groups of persons requiring care. (Dictionary.com 2015, Sweet et al. 2015, Boscarino et al. 2004, Schutz 2009, Huggard 2003) Dissimilarities were also identified by reflecting differences that either illustrated a slight bias in support of the research being conducted or by mitigating the description by omitting characteristics of the concept. For example, both definitions of Compassion Fatigue (The Oxford Dictionary of English n.d. , Dictionary.com n.d.) indicate a principle of causation (cause and effect).…
