Skin is the body’s largest organ; it’s all over us and yet we fail to appreciate the many tasks it must do to keep us safe and disease-free. But our skin is more special and more complex than one thinks. Made up of the epidermis and dermis, our skin can resist and repair cuts and burns and many other traumas. Our skin, however, is not invincible and can sometimes fall susceptible to many different diseases and cancers, like melanoma.

Melanoma
Per Adam Riker, one of the authors of The Epidemiology, Prevention, and Detection of Melanoma, melanoma is the 6th most fatal cancer in the United States, and the second common cancer found in women ages 20 to 29 years old. One of the most common and main causes, UV radiation. The most common form of UV radiation is sunlight and it contains the three main types of UV Rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC. These waves are all classified by wavelengths, describing the distance between peaks in a sequence of rays.

When someone educates us on the importance of wearing sunscreen and staying protected from the sun, people should pay attention and take the matter seriously. Something to take away from this research is that l, although melanoma seems uncontrollable and frightening, it is easy to prevent and decrease the chances of this cancer from appearing. For example, people can:
Reapply sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) throughout the day to prevent any harsh burns.
Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves so the sun won 't easy burn the skin.
Use the ABCD rule (Asymmetry, Border Irregularity, Color, and Diameter) when evaluating any new moles or pigmented spots. Some experts suggest evaluating these new moles or pigmented spots as early as age 16.

The UV rays will eventually cause the DNA replications which will make the cells replicate very fast making the cancer tumors. When treated early it is most of the time solved and doesn’t come back. When the early melonoma is not treated it will soon turn into malignant melonoma and will spread around the body to many vital organs.…

Indoor tanning is a very controversial practice in today’s mainstream society. There are many people who use them frequently and wouldn’t know what to do without them. Mary Adams conducted a study on the perspectives of collegiate tanners, and 73% of her participants admitted to using tanning beds, even though they believed they were harming their bodies by doing it (Adams). However, there are others who heed the warnings and stay away from the fiery furnaces. Many studies have been done on the dangers of tanning beds, and almost everyone is aware that the Center for Disease Control has linked them to skin cancers including melanoma (which is the deadliest type), basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma (Indoor Tanning).…

With more tanning salons in the state of Florida than McDonald's, CVS stores, or Bank of America branches, indoor tanning has become a serious problem everywhere (Tavernise A16). A tan is the skin’s response to UV light damage but still, many long for golden skin (“That Not So Healthy Glow”). Tanning is not an issue secluded to adults. Every year, 1.6 million American minors tan in tanning beds and of those who tan, more than half of them have tanned over ten times in that year (Tavernise A16). Even though there are large health risks, only 40 states have restrictions and only 11 of those states have full under-18 bans (Tavernise A16).…
