Skin is the body’s largest organ; it’s all over us and yet we fail to appreciate the many tasks it must do to keep us safe and disease-free. But our skin is more special and more complex than one thinks. Made up of the epidermis and dermis, our skin can resist and repair cuts and burns and many other traumas. Our skin, however, is not invincible and can sometimes fall susceptible to many different diseases and cancers, like melanoma.

Per Adam Riker, one of the authors of The Epidemiology, Prevention, and Detection of Melanoma, melanoma is the 6th most fatal cancer in the United States, and the second common cancer found in women ages 20 to 29 years old. When someone educates us on the importance of wearing sunscreen and staying protected from the sun, people should pay attention and take the matter seriously. Something to take away from this research is that l, although melanoma seems uncontrollable and frightening, it is easy to prevent and decrease the chances of this cancer from appearing. For example, people can:
Reapply sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) throughout the day to prevent any harsh burns.
Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves so the sun won 't easy burn the skin.
Use the ABCD rule (Asymmetry, Border Irregularity, Color, and Diameter) when evaluating any new moles or pigmented spots. Some experts suggest evaluating these new moles or pigmented spots as early as age 16.
