Personal Narrative: Melanoma

It was a day like any other. I was finishing up some paperwork on my most recent skin graph when a call came in from the front desk, my next patient was here. I had yet to physically see the patient myself, but I had already made a prediction based on what was already known: Melanoma. The most dangerous form of skin cancer. Over 200,000 documented cases around the world each year, killing roughly 2% of those effected. [1] Despite the seemingly high survival rate, Melanoma is very deadly when not treated early on. Modern awareness and technology have helped to bring those numbers to very manageable, but the modern trend of a golden tan skin is holding the numbers at bay. Of course, I was just making estimates at this point as to the severity of my patient’s condition. Despite the seemingly innocents of the situation, I had a gut feeling that a long battle was brewing. The first step when dealing with a situation like this is always recognize the symptoms. As my patient entered the room, I immediately began making observations. A middle aged female with red hair, a prime target for melanoma. The gene that causes red hair, MC1R, is especially susceptible to melanoma. [2] She also was a lighter complexion, another check mark for skin cancer. My patient alerted me to the fact that she had done extensive tanning when she was …show more content…
We had to take a sample of the tissue to send in for a biopsy, as well as a full body photography to ensure we are only dealing with a single site. [5] The next appointment was scheduled for three days later due to the urgency of the situation. I took a small sample from the tissue of the mole, which had grown slightly larger and more ominous in comparison to the previous visit. I sent it in to the lab with high hopes. I also scheduled my patient for an appointment with a specialist to photograph the majority of her skin. I too sent that in for further

So how about this. Federally Mandated, or even State Mandated posters should be hung in tanning salons. On them, information about detecting melanoma, risk factors for melanoma, activities which increase the risk of melanoma, and local dermatologists who can treat melanoma should all be listed. A massive fine would have to back the mandate for the posters, and on the booths themselves, labels that outline the risks associated between tanning and melanoma should be placed.…

Indoor tanning is a very controversial practice in today’s mainstream society. There are many people who use them frequently and wouldn’t know what to do without them. Mary Adams conducted a study on the perspectives of collegiate tanners, and 73% of her participants admitted to using tanning beds, even though they believed they were harming their bodies by doing it (Adams). However, there are others who heed the warnings and stay away from the fiery furnaces. Many studies have been done on the dangers of tanning beds, and almost everyone is aware that the Center for Disease Control has linked them to skin cancers including melanoma (which is the deadliest type), basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma (Indoor Tanning).…

Melanoma is one of themost serious consequences of skin cancer where melanocytesproliferate actively with enhanced accumulation of melaninpigment leading to hyperpigmentation and tumor formation. Up-regulated levels oftyrosinase enzyme appear to be correlated to with greater production and accumulation of melanin which induces skin cancer. Cicalo continued to artificially tan until the age of twenty when she was diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. After receiving a melanoma diagnosis, a patient goes through many periodical examinations. In Cicala’s case, she “gets a head-to-toe skin exam every three months, which usually result in removal of a suspicious growth” and she has had surgeries that “have left her with about twenty-five scars” (U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services 6). Brittany Lietz Cicala is a living testimony of what can happen to someone so young when they abuse they’re right to use the harmful ultraviolet radiations of a tanning bed. Someone else who is having to live with the consequences of tanning while being underage is the twenty-two year old wife of one of John Rusche’s medical students.…
