Melanogaster Essay

Sexual interactions with same-sex are widespread among animals, but until now the puzzle remains. One of the animals that exhibit this behavior is the Drosophila Melanogaster or fruit flies, in which this paper will be focusing on. Fruit flies have the ability to reproduce rapidly, tendency for males to mate intensely with immature males (Dukas, 2010). Over the past few years, since fruit flies’ genome are simple, researchers made a constant effort in studying the same-sex behavior in Drosophila Melanogaster or fruit flies and how a particular mutation in a gene was involved in the male-to-male courtship due to poor recognition of the opposite partner (Everaerts, Lacaille, & Ferveur, 2010). Bailey, Hoskins, Green, and Ritchie (2013) confirm …show more content…
We will randomly collect 140 wild types of Drosophila Melanogaster between August 20-24, and will house it to the lab. Once collected, we will execute three treatments for the fruit flies. Ensure to carry out the experiment under the same nutritional food and desirable environmental conditions since, fruit flies only have an average life of a month. The first trial will consist of 3 males and 3 females isolated in a 6 cm cork stopper glass bottle and measure the mating experience of each focal male with spot checks once every hour (Han & Brooks, 2015). For trial two, after a week of equal ratio treatment, in day 8, focal males will be assigned randomly with 4 males to 2 females and 2 males to 4 females sex ratio treatment. After 7 days we will have to repeat the experiment but this time each focal males will be isolated within 24 hours for 7 days and measure the mounting events. We will use a different method for measuring the frequency of SSB and its impact using a behavioral assay on mating success in a biased male-ratio. For treatment three, 90 males will be place into 1 to 1 ratio in a 24 hour isolation period for 7 days with varying levels of food availability. After 7 days, we then have to place a focal male to 3 random males for 2 days. Immediately, after 2 days of isolation of the focal male, we

As a group we have taken two sterile plastic vials and placed a cup of Drosophila medium powder into each one. After adding a cup of the medium with added half a cup of distillated water into the plastic vial, which allowed the medium to dissolve into it. We allowed a few minutes for the media to be absorbed and afterwards we applied a cotton plug to close the entrance to the vial. Anesthetizing the Drosophila flies In the lab, we had the fruit flies already asleep in a green bucket filled all the way up with ice.…

Q-flies are currently released as a bisexual strain in SIT programmes. The impact of released males can be greatly diluted by the presence of millions of sexually receptive sterile females, and this has been recognized as a potential limit on the efficacy of SIT. As there is no genetic sexing strain available for Q-fly, and so both males and females would be treated with methoprene prior to field release. If methoprene accelerates sexual maturation in Q-fly females, then these sterile females will mate with the sterile males, reducing the chances that the sterile males attract and mate with wild fertile females. However, if methoprene accelerates maturation in males more than in females, then this treatment could act similar to that of a genetic…

For this lab we conducted a population genetics study on the frequency of wild and apterous flies within a small population of fruit flies. The fruit fly Drosophila works well for genetic and evolutionary geared studies because they have a relatively short generation time but are intricate enough to reveal some biological principles that are parallel to many different kinds of eukaryotic organisms. When exposed to artificial selection in laboratory experiments, fruit flies have experienced dramatic changes behavioral and evolutionary traits within ten generations or less (Goldsmith, 1991). It is important to note that wild flies have wings and apterous flies do not. The purpose of artificial selection is for humans to modify species over generations by intentionally breeding two organisms with the objective of acquiring a specific trait.…

In every cross we saw this, but I’m going to use the second cross as my example. In the parental generation, all of the flies were either red eyed females or white eyed males. In the next generation, there were a quarter of each type. This showing that some traits are going to be recessive, and masked when the dominant trait will also be present. We know that the fruit flies follow these patterns, because when we all counted them out, mostly were close the expected amount of each type.…

The results of our light and dark choice chamber experiment are ambiguous. The pillbugs appeared to be indifferent towards either the light or dark chambers. The pillbugs did not stay in one environment for a long period of time because they were active and constantly switched between the two habitats. This shows a lack of preference as well. Our data was fairly erratic as shown in figure 5, which is reflective of the pillbugs activity.…

Fist I ordered a female that had a certain phenotype and a male that had a different phenotype. The female’s genotype was DD when it was Wild type and tr. when it had a black body and sepia eyes. The male’s genotype was dd when it was Vestigial and TR when it had a tan body and red eyes. After mating the flies and waiting “Two weeks” which was really a few seconds for the offsprings to develop, I sorted the flies under the microscope. I then counted the offsprings and how many were Wild type and how many were Vestigial and later with the offsprings of the Drosophila melanogasters that had tan and black bodies with sepia and red eyes.…

"Latino" is the umbrella term, meaning they fall under one category for people of Latin American descent that in recent years has made into a more imprecise term "Hispanic." Cuban Americans, Puerto Ricans, Mexican Americans, and any people who trace their ethnic roots back to Central or South America are considered Latino if they live in the United States. Hispanic Americans, like many other minority groups in the US, have long suffered from the effects of racial stereotyping. Typical stereotypes include: the Greaser, the Lazy Mexican, the Latin…

Hypotheses The hand capturing method allows more accuracy when looking at our datum for the mean of body lengths of the Corophium Volutator. While using this method we are sampling from a wider surface at low tide, which allows us to pick out more of a variety of these organisms from the environment we are studying. As well as the Corophium Volutators otherwise known as mud shrimps have not been exposed to anything in this sampling technique therefore they are in their most natural habitat, where as in the sediment sifting method they are exposed to seawater. The hand capturing method allows us to sample from a larger surface therefore our datum will be more precise giving us a more accurate representation of the organisms in this environment.…
