Although medications can be useful to treat depression, expressing your feelings is the most successful regimen. Lifestyle changes that can treat depression include exercise, nutrition, sleep, social support, and stress reduction. Regular exercise can be as effective as medication. Exercise boosts serotonin, endorphins, and other brain chemicals. It also triggers new brain cells and connections, just like antidepressants do. Eating well is important for physical and mental health. When you eat small meals that are well balanced you will help keep your energy up and will minimize mood swings. Sleep has a very strong effect on your mood. When you do not sleep enough, your depression symptoms will get worse. Sleep deprivation increases moodiness, sadness, and fatigue. You should sleep for between seven to nine hours every night. Having strong social support, friends and family who are involved and care, can make you feel a world of difference.
