Personal Response-I Survived The Nazi Invasion, 1944 I enjoyed the story because I like reading about the Holocaust. Learning more about all that happened is cool. Horrible things took place and I think it’s cool how the Nazis were killed after it was all done. Plot-…
In this novel, Hans Hubermann, a decorator, is hiding a Jew named Max. The reason he is hiding Max, is because his father once saved his life during the First World War when they were both German soldier. Hans and his wife, Rosa, recently adopted Liesel, a young girl, and the main character of this book. Important to the plot, is the growing relationship between Liesel and Hans, then later, Max and Liesel. Also in this novel, the narrator is Death, but a unique Death.…
The Power of Literature Hideous and atrocious acts have been committed throughout time; however, none of them are more despicable than the Holocaust. It was during this time that roughly six million Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazis. It is a piece of history that is taught in millions of classrooms across the world. There are various ways of telling this chilling tale and for the most part, it is presented in a factual, history book-type lesson. This can be interesting and beneficial; however it leaves human emotion out of the story and with so many emotions involved refusing to convey them would only be telling part of the story.…
In The Book Thief, Liesel Meminger had a great relationship with her foster father, Hans Hubermann. Overtime, this relationship developed into something very special. I believe this relationship is the purest and strongest in the book. Hans who is an incredibly kind, decent and patient man, easily wins over Liesel’s affections after she comes to the Hubermann household. He does this through several different acts of kindness all of which help Liesel feel loved, supported and okay with who she is.…
Is reading a way for you to escape reality? This was the story for Liesel Meminger. The novel takes place in Germany, in 1939, around the time she was 10. Liesel and her brother, Werner, were on their way to their new foster parents, Rosa and Hans Hubermann, when Werner unexpectedly dies. Before she arrives in Molching, she attends her brother’s funeral, where she steals the book The Gravedigger’s…
Words, specifically the power of words, is arguably the most important theme of the story. If Hitler had not rose to power with words of hatred, Liesel would have never gone to Himmel Street. Words tore her family apart, developed her relationship with her Papa, and saved her life. The story tells us how destructive and wonderful words are, especially during that time period. Throughout the story, words play a significant part in the plot of the story and Liesel’s…
The Thief has been stuck in the king's prison for years. All the day's seemed the same but everyday he would get worse like , not taking a shower or smelling. Every morning in the prison it would be a really wavering orange shining through the bars of the cell. He was stuck in the prison for years because another king asked him to steal something from this king. Since the thief was the best thief around.…
While Liesel looks for Max she thinks about the books he gave her, The Word Shaker and The Standover Man. She tries to match the faces of the parading Jews “to the Jew who wrote The Word Shaker”(309). It proves that, because Liesel is interested in books, she begins to learn about Max and they begin to care for each other. So, Max gives her books that he writes for her. It goes against the Nazis because Liesel cares about a Jewish…
In The Book Thief, the themes of survivor’s guilt, love, and the power of words express the kindness and cruelty of humanity. These themes demonstrate how different experiences, dismal and joyous, come together to shape who a person is. At the beginning of the novel, Liesel was a scared little girl with no hope in the human race. After experiencing guilt, love and the power of words, Liesel discovers light in a world filled with…
Liesel discovers that kind words can be utilized to battle evil ones and I think that is part of what gives joy to Liesel and Max. You see, he took something that was hateful and discriminating and turned it into something that Liesel could enjoy, that was about Himself and his long journey to where he was then and even though Mein Kampf was full of hatred he turned it into something Liesel could enjoy knowing that she loves books it is a simple gesture that came from the heart of his character showing humanity inside him but it didn’t matter how well written the book was it was the fact that Liesel had something to remember Max by that brought her the joy and…
The Contradictory Nature of Humanity The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is a novel narrated by Death. Death often speaks of humans and their habits, and he often questions the way humans treat others. He tells the story of a young girl that is raised in a place full of hate, but Death very often tells the reader of some beautiful things that happen. Death believes that humans are not compassionate and decent to each other, but there are certain moments that lead him to believe otherwise, and many of those moments are demonstrated in The Book Thief.…
Liesel is very hesitant the first time entering, representing her fear of discovering her underlying feelings and bringing them to the surface. After psychoanalytically seeking out the comfort of being a feeble child by writing letters to her mother, she realizes that her mother does not want her and she is alone and deserted in the world. Liesel finds shelter and comfort in the basement through reading, writing, and laying in a fetal position underneath the table, representing her underlying deprivation of a childhood. Liesel ultimately finds enjoyment in escaping reality by hiding inside herself. She spends most of her time writing everywhere she can: letters to her mother, words on the walls, even her own novel: The Book Thief.…
WWII can be seen through many eyes and The Book Thief tells its story through the eyes of Death (Zusak 3). Death tells a story of a German young girl named Liesel and her experience of growing up through WWII (Zusak 5) In the book, the reader sees the importance of reading through the stages of Liesel’s childhood. To her, the books she steals are not just words on pages. They remind her of a turning point in her youth. The importance of reading in Liesel’s life can be reflected in the reader’s life.…
The theme that is ever present in the novel is to always hold onto hope. The Book Thief’s main character, Liesel Meminger, never loses hope through all she endures. In fact, Liesel seems to always have hope when the odds are stacked against her. For example, there was a time in the book when Max had been asleep for many weeks.…
One person that helps Liesel change was Max. Max was the son of Hans Hubermann’s dead friend who is sought after for being Jewish. While Max hides in their basement, he writes his own books that were titled as The Standover Man and Word Shaker. In the Word Shaker, Max wrote about Liesel and how Hitler realizes that words have an effect on people. He also wrote that the people on top are the ones that fully understand words.…
