Megachurches: Why Christians Need To Go To Church

The attendance in churches has dropped tremendously throughout the years. A study from 2007 to 2014 showed that “the number of Americans identifying as Christians fell from 78.4 percent (178.1 million people) to 70.6 percent (172.8 million people)”(LeClaire). There are many reasons why numerous people have left the church. For one, not all families attend church every single weekend. Several people from the church community only attend service for certain holidays, like Christmas and Easter, causing the attendance status to increase and decrease. Those who attend on certain occasions think that holidays are the only days they have to go to church and think that they do not need to go to church for the rest of the year. Megachurches take a massive part into bringing attention to people inside and outside of the church. These churches are non-traditional congregations that attract individuals to come into the church. Many of these types of churches have an attendance of thousands of people. Brad Smith, head of the Leadership Network, a foundation that works with churches nationwide, discusses the expansion of megachurches and states, “They're still growing very quickly, and there's a lot of them that are springing up”(Smith). Megachurches are becoming more common because size is an attraction to many communities. An additional attraction to others is making guests feel safe, loved, and welcomed. These types of congregations have many programs to be a part of, including small groups, helping improve the community, and volunteering within the church. Big congregations typically have a cafe, gymnasium, bookstore, and a huge auditorium. They even offer open space for meetings for citizens who don’t even attend church.
