Sports are always an interesting topic. Mega sport events are major catalysts to cultural globalization. The Olympics are a pretext for social pleasure, a background, a cultural wallpaper element of a social environment. It is a major catalyst to the longitudinal and fluctuating transformation processes which undermine the local culture at all levels to concurrently construct a common global culture. Compared to other topics in globalization, sporting events rely on deference’s and competition. A major event that happens every four year is the Olympics. With transnational villages, migration is not necessary for membership because participation of migrants in their home communities is so great that even non-migrants are influence by it. Social remittances as well as economic remittances structure transnational village life. Social remittances are defined as “…The ideas, behaviours, and social capital that flow from receiving to sending communities…the tools by which ordinary individuals create global culture at the local level”. The social elements flow between the units of systems and are perceived to be similar to one another. Often a practice is more likely to be adopted when it is seen as modern or westernized. This provides the strength and influences different communities give, provide, and take. Most of the research done in this field has been focused on the macro-level institutions spread throughout the economic and political systems. Major factors within the institutions are the ordinary people whom are the cultural creators and carriers. There are three types of social remittances that this article speaks about. The first type is the normative structure. This is the ideas, values, and beliefs of the people. This could be on a macro level of specific groups, or on the micro level of individual beliefs, values, and ideas. When it first opened there were only approximately 150 Spanish-speaking Christians. By 1970, they needed to switch locations for a larger space. They were then able to offer Sunday School in English for the children, and Spanish speaking classes and worship services for the adults. As the congregation grew they started facing difficulties and challenges in cultural diversity, theological distinctions, and social and political differences. One thing this congregation always did on the year of its anniversary was the Parade of Nations. By 1982, the church had grown in numbers, and had members from over 20 different nations. The parade of nations was created in order to illustrate the logic around the global flows within the structure and the content within the network. “It illustrates how migrants and the role that religion plays in the social spaces are ‘betwixt’ and ‘between’ … It is a site where the flows of migrations and religion converge …” The event at hand was meant to create a local setting where those participating transformed multiple worlds/nations into a transnational community. It not only celebrated the uniqueness of each nation but also the globalization that has been happening.
