Mega Brands: How Food Companies Manipulate Society

Throughout history, food companies have always managed to manipulate society. Michael Moss has gone out of his way to tell the story of the history and how the mastermind planning behind the mega brands made them who they are today. The unaware public can now be more aware and start to make better choices for their health. Shoppers are too vulnerable from food companies. They have their foods engineered to perfection, they “taught” the society what to eat and has caused a health crisis just so they can make billions for themselves. The processed foods companies have revolutionized some food products, changed the amounts and the way that it should be eaten. Cheese used to be consumed in small amounts, that goes the same for sugar and salt. …show more content…
According to Moss “The gains in consumption to be had from hidden fats was certainly not bad news for the food industry.”(Moss 181). Companies are formulating products in a way that the consumers will not even notice the fats in their products, an example of this is DiGiorno’s pizza. This will cause consumers to eat even more and gain more weight. Moss stated that “they’re not thinking about the consumer’s welfare, they’re are thinking about consumption and sales.”(Moss 338). Unfortunate for the consumers, the mega companies do not take responsibility or care for the consumer’s health. In order to reach the bliss point, they have to added massive amounts of fats, salt and sugar. When the leaders and employees of the companies are trying to avoid their products, that should raise a red flag for the shoppers. This nation has a third of its adults obese, it has gone to the point where it has become a crisis. There are still some companies who are trying to make a change. A good example is Nestlé, they are working on fighting obesity. Even it is too late for this generation to see a change during their lives, it is never too late to
