Meet Have Hashad Character Analysis

Meet Have Hashad. She’s a 70-year-old loner, who no one really understands. She is short and fragile with puffy gray hair. Hashad wears only turtleneck sweaters, and rarely puts on pants. She lives in a run-down shack on the edge of a strange island called Socotra.

Have Hashad seems very abnormal to everyone except herself. No one quite knows how Have Hashad could live in solitude for nearly every day of her life, but with the information I have heard about this woman, I have been able to conclude why she lives the way she does. Many villagers I have contacted tell me that if they could describe her traits they would say “mentally-unsettled” and “creepy”. People say she could spend hours at a time just licking the dirt. Others told me she would pick the legs off spiders and tie them into bracelets. Every single villager looked down upon Hashad for her eccentricities. Islanders tell me that Hashad could never hold a job, and after a while Hashad decided that she wanted to just live with nature for the rest of her days without disruption, with no worries and no stress. Her plan was to live freely.

Hashad didn’t mind the dog being different, and the dog didn’t find Hashad’s behavior weird at all. I have observed that the two of them can relate because they are both considered outsiders. This made me want to research more about Hashad’s

The character Min, from A Single Shard has many unique traits that one would consider a weakness. A character traits that Min possesses that one would consider a weakness is that he is a perfectionist. One quote that shows how Min is a perfectionist is, "Min had smashed the vases himself." This quote shows how Min is a perfectionist because even though the inlay work in the vases were close to perfect, Min still smashed the vases because the glaze was off. He could still use the vases to show the royal emissary his precise work, but because he is a perfectionist, he refused to show him because of the glaze and smashed the vases himself.…

Throughout the novel the writing shifts from a surrealist encounter to a displaced realistic life experience that highlights the individual self, representing the broader notion of an inconsistent life during war. The surrealist chapter in which Jawads displacement becomes most apparent is when he remembers his first love Reem. This particular dream sequence in which Jawad see’s Reem in a “orchard full of blossoming pomegranate trees” help illuminate the surreal tone in the novel that dramatically shifts to “…Reem crying as she tries to stop the fountain of blood gushing from the wound” to captivate the sudden turmoil’s people face during war (102). When involving his real life experiences through his occupation and family encounters, the chapters involving the death of his brother help create the tested part of human condition as the author uses cultural expectations to allude to the hardships of war. Particularly when finding out the death of his brother, BLAH, Jawad is faced with the task to tell his father, amidst his Mother and neighbors joining in a cultural wailing.…
