Medusa: Beauty Turned to Savage Monster
Many tales have been told for centuries about the dreaded and frightening creature that went by the name of Medusa of Gorgon. Over the years this Gorgon creature took the form of a classical Greek mythological woman with serpents for hair who possessed the ability to turn her enemies to stone from a simple glare. Although true, there is much more to this tale including exactly what drove Medusa to become such a horrendous and feared creature and how she would live out the rest of her life. Apollodorus’s book on the life of Medusa would later become known as Library and was one of the most informative readings with exception detail about Medusa. This however was not solely accomplished from Apollodorus, he used details from other, older works to compile one main work of art that is still to this date one of the best representations of the Medusa myth (Hirschmann 14). His book is important because it proves which myths about Medusa are true and which ones are false starting from before Medusa was even born all the way up to what happened after her brutal death. Gaia and Pontus started to create numerous offspring, of which were two important children, Keto, which took the form of a human woman but still possessed alarming powers over sea creatures and Phorkys, which took the form of a red-skinned merman with scales, horns and claws for feet (Hirschmann 14). Although brother and sister, Phorkys and Keto started creating their own offspring which were just as monstrous if not more than their parents. One of Phorkys and Keto’s offspring was a child who was half viper and half nymph which would later give birth to an enormous amount of monstrous offspring. Later Keto and Phorky would give birth to a set of triplet sisters named the Gorgons, which comprised of Euryale, Sthenno, and Medusa. These three sisters were both terrifying and held the ability of witch like supernatural powers making them even more feared. Although these sisters were feared, not all their physical appearances matched their abilities. Euryale and Sthenno have looked like monsters since their time of birth but Medusa was different. Medusa appeared as a beautiful woman in human form with gorgeous hair that would soon become noticed by other men
