The lay person, the secondary audience, can easily access this site as well. I think the secondary audience would be turned off by the technicality of the website jargon. They do try to persuade the primary audience by posting ads such as, “Free access anywhere, anytime. Search 10,000+ drugs, diseases, and procedures” (Medscape, 2016). Mayo Clinic’s primary audience seems to be the lay person. The secondary audience here would be the healthcare provider. They entice the primary audience by making the site very user friendly, providing bullet point information, not a lot of medical jargon, and short and simple explanations for each tab clicked on. Medscape uses a lot of technical phrases and jargon, such as, “Karyotypic analysis revealed constitutional deletions within the short arm of 1 copy of chromosome 11.” (Paulino, 2016) and “BWS is an overgrowth syndrome characterized by visceromegaly, macroglossia, and hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia” (Paulino, 2016).
