They hardly spend more than four minutes at the surface of the water between dives. It is thought that they eat deep-water marine animals, for example, ratfish, swell sharks, spiny dogfish, eels, rockfish, and squid. Elephant seals shed each year between April and August, shedding not only their hair but the upper layer of their skin as well. This is identified as catastrophic molt. They return to the beaches for a few weeks while they molt.…
Canadian Seal Hunt The famous Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai once said “Environment and the economy are really both two sides of the same coin. If we cannot sustain our environment, we can not sustain ourselves” This has led me to the belief that the Canadian Seal hunt should not be banned because of the environmental benefits, economical benefits and the health benefits it provides that have been discovered through well developed research. Firstly, the seal hunt is balancing out the ecosystem. Research shows that seals in Newfoundland and Labrador are consuming 250, 000 MT of Turbot, 800, 000 MT of capelin and…
They adapted to the aquatic environment when it was free from boats, pollution, noise, and fishing. Some threats to the Atlantic spotted dolphin in habitat degradation, boat traffic, and fishing interactions. Humans have exploited the of the ecosystem. Marine mammals utilize the environment for resting, and socializing.…
John Wyndham’s Chrysalids expresses the contrasting views, of the advances of civilization. The author describes these variant philosophies through unique personalities-a futuristic Sealand Woman, Jacob a senior farmer and a deviant Fringes soldier. A “chrysalis” is the metamorphosis of a caterpillar to an independent butterfly. Correspondingly, man forms drastic transformations, by breaking boundaries and sharing diverse insights.…
Depriving California Seals of their Home In the article “Harbor Seals in the Children’s Pool,” the author writes about different opinions for keeping harbor seals in the children pool or chasing them away. The author gives examples of people who agree to keep the seals the seals and their reasons, and other who don’t agree and their sights and aspects. The author shows us the two sides of the issue as positive and negative effects of keeping the children’s Beach as a rookery for California Seals. In my opinion, I agree to keep the seals at La Jolla’s children Pool Beach for many positive effects.…
The traditional seal fur trade should be discontinued in order to protect seal pups. If we eliminate seal pups to make clothes, then the whole ecosystem would be destroyed. The main food source of seal pups is fish and if there were no seal pups, then fish, along with other smaller sea animals, would overpopulate. Are we willing to sacrifice our humanity and ecosystem for clothes?…
(Include his first name and profession) Aldsworth states, “D. Sergeant warned under these conditions, and without imposition of effective controls, the stock of western Atlantic harp seals must be considered to be in grave danger of catastrophic decline” (94). Clearly, there was a large amount of disapproval among the science field workers who feared possible extinction of seals in Canada despite the lack of wide scale media attention. Despite this shortage of media outlet, even humane societies became involved in the struggle against the animal cruelty that was taking place in Canada. “Humane societies first sent observers to the seal hunt during the 1950s, and reports of cruelty slowly filtered out to the public” (Proulx…
In week 7, Jennifer Olson gave a presentation talk on the stranding network in San Juan County Washington. Olson talked about the importance of the stranding network and in what ways their team is doing adding to the vast amount of information known on these animals. The Marine Mammal Stranding Network is important due to contributioning knowledge and help it provides. Not only this, but the stranding network uses this data to present/ inform management decisions. This knowledge is valuable due to exposing human and/or ecosystem health issues.…
When a new whale does not perform correctly it is punished through starvation, driving the orca into depression and physical stress. Wild orcas are not submissive, they are at the top of the food chain in their environment, and taking orders from a tiny human seems fairly unreasonable. Wild orcas also are accustomed to traveling large distances daily, and living in small tanks creates severe amounts of stress. Like humans, orca whales can develop stress-related illnesses, like stomach ulcers, from being in small tanks as well as being subjected to noises and vibrations from pumps and filters. Curtis (1992) wrote “when a popular performing cetacean dies, the facility that owns it usually just obtains another and gives it the same name as the one that died (p. 55).…
The Elephant and the Dove The relationship of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera is considered one of the most notable and controversial of modern times. This pair of brilliant and passionate artists can easily be considered to be a true power couple in the 20th century. Mexico 's most famous artists have certainly changed many people 's thoughts of their native home and together, Frida and Diego, have laid down a road for artists of the future to follow. It is their obvious differences that make them such a unique couple and their similarities that make them controversial. Frida Kahlo was born in Coyoacan, Mexico on July, 6 1907, this date was later changed by herself to 1910 to match the year of the Mexican Revolution so that she and modern Mexico would be associated together.…
This predicted experimental design tested the hypothesis that male sea lions act differently alone then with a group of females. Results do support the hypothesis that male sea lions tend to interact more with each other compared to females. The data would inform the reader that these behaviors only would last for a short period. Sleeping and other aggressive behaviors would be at the same level. During the three days observing, there will be many times that there will be no display of various behaviors.…
Animals should be allowed to live in their natural habitat. Removing an animal from its environment at a young age is similar to separating an infant from its parents and placing it with strangers. Killer whales live in organized social structures, like we do, and are negatively affected when they are separated from their young. Research has repeatedly shown that orcas held in captivity suffer from elevated levels of stress. A clear example of this is seen in the collapsed dorsal fin of captive male orcas.…
SeaWorld is a family oriented, recreational theme park where individuals can pay around 80 dollars for one day admission to experience live orca shows, ride roller coasters, and visit animals in the aquarium exhibits. SeaWorld is an entertaining vacation option; especially for families. Although, many people who have visited SeaWorld do not know the behind the scenes care of the orcas in captivity. SeaWorld mistreats orcas, which in turn creates stress, and a shorter, unhealthy, and unhappy life for the whales in captivity.…
Samuel Taylor Coleridge: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1797. At first sight it may just seem like an epic sea voyage told by an old sailor to a wedding guest, but underlying this is a Christian allegory that teaches us about wrong-doing, suffering and redemption. He uses many different literary techniques to portray these three points. These literary techniques are displayed differently throughout the course of this long poem.…
Clash in “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” contains some elements of the Romantic period. The poem deals with ideas about nature, supernatural world, and man’s inner self. On the other hand, R.C. Waterson says that Coleridge’s poem belongs to “no age, but to all the men of all ages” (147). In general, most critics do agree with R.C. Waterson since the poem deals mainly with man and his conflicts. The whole poem is about a seaman and his human experiences at sea.…
