Introduction
Mediterranean (House) Gecko The Mediterranean gecko (Hemidactylus turcicus) is a small gecko common to the Mediterranean which has spread to many parts of the world. This lizard is native to the Mediterranean and west Asia. These species inhabit in parts of Taiwan, Polynesia, Somalia, Madagaskar, Andaman and Nicobar Island, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. In fact they are now also found in Australia, Mexico, Brazil and USA. It is also commonly referred to as the Turkish Gecko as represented in its Latin name. They are insectivores, rarely exceeding 15 centimetres or 5.9 inches in length, have large, lidless eyes with elliptical pupils. A tall form 10 gallon tank is sufficient for one or two geckos while two to four can be kept in a 20 gallon tank. Substrate can be paper, smooth pebbles, fine sand, peat moss, potting soil, or specialized reptile litters. There should be at least one hiding place for each gecko. Place branches and other decorative objects in the tank for climbing. Provide a shallow dish for water with some pebbles in the bottom to help avoid drowning of live food. The direct area over the light will more than likely be up to 88 degrees Fahrenheit during the day time and it will probably be about 70 degrees Fahrenheit at night. The lighting should be used at a minimum of 10 hours a day to 14 hours a day, and should be used by an incandescent bulb. To obtain the perfect humidity take a water bottle filled with water and a spray nozzle and you lightly spray the inside of the enclosure and the gecko. This is called misting and will help ensure that your humidity stays at a healthy level. Some people will recommend that you mist your house gecko every single day and some people will recommend that you do it several times a day just to be
