For women during the early medieval era it was a time of relative power and freedom. This was particularly the case in northern Europe, because not only did women have many of the same legal privileges as men, but they also had many of the same economic privileges as men. In fact, women could inherit property and manage estates; women could also take over their husbands’ businesses as widows and women could be a part of most guilds. Furthermore, peasant women in the medieval period worked equally with their male counterparts. This shows that women could obviously handle the same responsibilities of men and perform and handle these responsibilities just as well as men. However, from the thirteenth century onward, in France and other parts of Europe women’s power and independence started to decline. Yet, male patrons asserted authorization over the standards of performance typically defined women’s genres and performances. This is a perfect example of male power over women and of male dominance and superiority within society during this time period. Besides her role as a musician the courtesan women was also educated. Women court musicians during this time were among the best educated women. In Christine de Pisan’s book she first asks lady reason if women should have education and could women handle an education. Lady reason states that when daughters are educated like sons if daughters were taught natural sciences they would learn as thoroughly and understand all the subtleties of arts and sciences as well as sons. Lastly, this shows that women are equally as cable of learning as men and could handle similar roles in society.
There are many similarities between the roles of women in the Renaissance and medieval period. However, the main similarities are that woman were often controlled by men, their opportunities were often restricted due to the male dominance in society, unmarried educated women musicians were see as morally corrupt, and women were seen as being inferior compared to men.
