1. Definition of a “Sword”: a weapon with a long metal blade and a hilt with a hand guard, used for thrusting or striking and now typically worn as part of ceremonial dress.
1) Arming Swords: The Arming sword (commonly known as the knight’s sword) is a single hand cruciform sword of the high middle ages in common use from approximately 1000 AD to 1350 AD, and remained in rare use in the 16th century. They were believed to be descendants from Viking swords.
They were commonly used with a shield or a buckler, and was the standard military sword of the knight until technological advancements led to the rise of the longsword. It was a light, versatile weapon capable of both cutting and thrusting and usually boats exceptional balance and weight.

In modern times, the term can be used to refer to the arming sword, the single handed cousin of the high Middle Ages.
3) Falchions: A falchion (from the old French word fauchon, which in itself was derived from the Latin word falx, which means sickle.) is a one handed, single edged sword of European origin. The design is similar to the Persian “scimitar”.
They were found in different forms around the 11th century up to and including the 16th century. Some forms of it look like versions of the scramasax, the sabre and machetes with a cross guard. While some propose that encounters with the Islamic shamshir inspired its creation, these "scimitars" of Persia were not developed until long after the
