What is a catapult? A catapult is a device that hurls an object some distance. There are many different types of catapults in the world, but some are used more than others. Catapults were used as siege engines against enormous castles and brick walled cities. All of the catapults changed the face of warfare. Catapults were one of the earliest weapons used in Medieval Times. “The three major types are the Ballista, Onager and Trebuchet” (RLT Industries, 2015). The catapults were able to crush walls, create fear, and cause chaos in war. Catapults are the weapons used in wars, some of which are the same and some different. The Trebuchet was used to throw enormous stones to smash cities and castles. The design of the Trebuchet required skilled workers. People also referred to the Trebuchet as the Trebucket. As workers of the middle ages worked on the Trebuchet catapult, they made the design have the greatest affect possible. Later, another ancient war engine was created called the traction Trebuchet. The Greeks were the first to invent the Ballista catapult, but the Ballista was later introduced to other places. “The Ballista is believed to be an ancient war engine which was invented by the Greeks and modified by the Romans in 400BC” (Alchin, 2015a). China used the Trebuchet to help their attacks. In conclusion, a catapult is a medieval war siege engine used to throw an object some distance. All catapults work the same, however, they have some differences. People use catapults for all the same reasons: crushing buildings, hurting people, and causing fear.
