There are several social determinants that effect the community’s wellbeing and they generally fall within the board categories of policymaking, social factors, healthcare services, and individual lifestyle and behavior. Social determinants play a crucial role in an individual’s heath and the community’s well being. Inequalities in social determinants often are what cause an individual to suffer poor health, which causes the wellbeing of the community to suffer as well. After reading The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, I believe that culture is a major social determinant that affects not just the health of the individual but also the health of the community. Being a 16-year –old, and having taken my first semester of college classes this semester with my high school classes on top of that, all here at CSN, has been an unforgettable experience. On the other hand, from the three college classes I have enrolled in, including German 111, Communications 101, and Anthropology 101, I have, in my opinion, learned the most with my Anthropology 101 class. This class has been a great and interesting experience that has allowed me to view the world in a different way than most people. To illustrate, even though I thought most of the things we discussed in class like linguistics and archaeology were interesting, I consider learning about ethnology the most memorable and fascinating concept for me. To illustrate,…

In particular, the mockumentaries 'Babakuieria' (1986) directed by Don Featherstone and 'The Majestic Plastic Bag' (2010) directed by Jeremy Konner both attempt to mock prominent issues that exist in society. Despite the different purpose of both mockumentaries, many similarities also exist. They both essentially acknowledge the necessity for society to look at issues from different perspectives.…

The acknowledgement of cultural differences when deciding how to proceed with medical treatment is vital, but when these cultural differences interfere with the preservation of life and the public health, a balance must be struck between a respect for other cultures and societal well-being. In The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, Lia Lee, who suffered from a serious form of epilepsy, faced obstacles in her treatment not only because of the doctors’ lack of complete understanding as to her condition, but her parents’ resistance to the actions of the doctors. The reason for this is twofold: a linguistic barrier prevented efficient and complete communication, and a severe cultural divide between the doctors’ ethnomedicine and traditional…
