The Implementation of the automated medication dispensing system had a pronounced impact on how the pharmacy department delivered medications to patients within the medical center. The goal of the project was to improve our patients’ pharmaceutical care in terms of medication delivery efficacy to our patients’ bedside for administration. Although, the pharmacy department serves all the Hospitals within the medical center, the project manager at that time, decided to roll out the project in all four hospitals in the medical center simultaneously. Furthermore, the vendor of the automated medication dispensing machines (AMDM) had personnel on the ground to troubleshoot for a few weeks and after that, as with most contracts we’ve had with other vendors, their support services became remote support.
However, the difference with this contract was, as the system began to function below expectations the support was not forthcoming as we would have liked. Consequently, supervisors and lead pharmacists were spending more time troubleshooting the AMDM than the department had anticipated. Toward the end of the AMDM contract’s life a new Pharmacy director was hired by the medical center, upon evaluating the problems we were encountering with the vendors of AMDM, he decided the hospitals will be better off with a new AMDM; and since he had vast experience with implementing medication dispense automation systems and contract negotiations, he was in a great position to lead the project successfully. His approach was to first set up a committee that defined the goals of conducting a retrospective analysis of the use of the AMDM within the medical center, and second, to determine how the department can reuse learned solutions to stop repetitive mistakes going
