Medication Scenario My client, John, is a single 59-year-old white male. John was recently diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and was prescribed Cymbalta. John earns approximately $22,000 per year and says he cannot afford to fill the medication. As John’s social worker, I have been asked to help him find a prescription assistance program. Based on my research, I find the Lilly Cares program to be the best for John and his medication needs. I will discuss why I believe this program is the best option for John. I will also briefly discuss the other medication assistance programs I found, and what I learned from this assignment.

The drug coupons I found are being advertised on the Internet Drug Coupons website (2015) and the Pharmacy Coupons website (2015). Both coupons are linked to a prescription assistance program that was not named.
The Benefits of Drug Coupons. According to the company websites, drug coupons would be helpful to John because they would decrease the price he would have to pay at the Pharmacy by up to 75%. Drug coupons can be used in conjunction with insurance and can be redeemed at several major pharmacies to include Wal-Mart and CVS. John would be eligible for a free trial of Cymbalta if he were to use a drug coupon. Also, there is also no limit to how many coupons he can use and membership is completely free.
The Downside of Drug Coupons. Similar to Lilly Cares and Welvista, drug coupons are not medical insurance. The companies that give out drug coupons reserve the right to change or end the coupon offer. Therefore, at any time John could loose his discount and have to pay full price at the pharamacy. I would not recommend drug coupons to my client.

Likewise, addicts were able to “doctor shop” by traveling from clinic to clinic and purchase as much supplies as legally possible in each location. Prescription drugs only represent 12 percent of total health care costs in the United States, but the rising prices of those drugs is an issue that keeps reoccurring not only for patients, but for prescribers, payers, and policy makers. As a result of these high prices for prescription drugs, some patients are taking risky measures by not taking their medicines as prescribed. According to the Center for Disease and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 10 patients do not follow the prescribed medication regimen by skipping dosages, filling prescription late, using less1 by cutting pills in half, or seeking black-market drugs on the internet that are not approved by…
