They’re many pros and cons when it comes to taking medication to essentially treating ADHD. One example of a pro when taking medication for ADHD is that the doses of stimulant drugs are not addictive. Despite this, an example of a con is that it affects a child’s physical development.The most common drugs used to treat the symptoms of ADHD is Adderall, Ritalin, and Dexedrine. Furthermore,there are two types of drugs used to treat ADHD which are stimulant and non-stimulant drugs. A stimulant drug is medications that “are believed to work by increasing dopamine levels in the brain” (HELPGUIDE). Meanwhile, a nonstimulant drug is a medication that is longer lasting than stimulants and wears off more easily (Medicnenet). In addition, there’s also three types of ADHD that a children or adolescent could have. The first kind is known as inattention which is when a child has difficulty staying focused, is disorganized, and is usually off task. Secondly, the next type of ADHD is hyperactivity which is when the child will move a lot in which they cannot stay still. First, some argue that medication helps kids in the classroom focus better but also it helps the focus outside of the classroom. About to 60% to 80% who take the medication become less hyperactive and impulsive and are able to focus at home or school (Consumer Reports) .According to Dr.Ravitz, medical doctor, says “Medication has to do with managing behavior in a variety of different circumstances” (Child Mind). Furthermore, she also states how “one mother tells the story of her son’s baseball coach pleading with her to put him back on meds because it made a critical difference in his performance.” ADHD medication appears to help children and adolescents with focusing on tasks even if it’s not school related.
