Stigmas and stereotypes should be replaced with positive thoughts, empathy, compassion; respect, love, integrity, and understanding the aging population issues that are dealt with on a daily basis. By creating a non-judgmental atmosphere and putting oneself in the aging population shoes, it will assist in finding better ways to provide treatment and care for the elderly along with providing a positive quality of life.Demographically the elderly population is continuing to grow in size and diversity which then results in an increase of social, economic, physical, and psychological problems. Barnes (2015) stated the United States elderly residents will increase to 20% by the year 2030. Multidimensional solutions will be required to meet the growing needs of psychosocial, economic, medical, and cognitive impairment of the over 65 years of age population (Barnes, 2015). Sindhu (2004) states society continues to modernize its focus on speed, strength, physical attractiveness, and efficiency which creates barriers. The elderly population is considered useless and the structure of society leaves the elderly vulnerable to finding meaningful roles that will impact them socially and emotionally. “The human and spiritual values of mutual love, respect, kindness, sympathy, passion, understanding, humility, non-violence, and considering each person in each phase of his life as equal, a worthy human being and a divine soul are most declining. The tendency of self centerlines, individualism, and being concerned for one’s own good and philosophy of feeling everything should be done for me and not for others is a dangerous trend which is prevalent in today’s family. People are more materialistic and consumeristic, over ambitious and money minded. The aged groups are facing challenges of the changing socioeconomic order, family atmosphere and setup” (Sindu, 2004). Kourkouta,

Also, numerous studies provide evidence that older adults’ needs are changing. Grant (2001) postulated that older adults are now keenly aware of ‘the benefits of maintaining a physically active lifestyle and how such behavior can contribute to quality of life and the feel better phenomenon” (p. 778). Thus, stereotypes of older adults of the past are now viewed as irrelevant as shown by older adults that live “longer lifespans, delayed retirement, and economic realities” (North, 2015, p. 994) that are in contrast to the realities of…

This week’s topic consisted of culture and aging it went as far as defining culture. The part of the definition for culture that I gravitated to the most was “An integrated pattern of human behavior which includes but not is included to: thought, communication, languages, beliefs, values, practices, customs, courtesies, rituals, manners of interacting, roles, relationships, and expected behavior. This is so vivid which shows that culture is not limited to beliefs, values and etc., but it goes way beyond and shows that culture difference plays a cognizant role in how individuals behave and relate to each other in general. It further ask how does culture affects aging and it affects aging both positively and negatively which shows that it’s not…

Lately I have been doing a lot of thinking, about life, and how someone might defined the overall quality, of his /her life. “ Quality of life”, is different to everyone, no two people will define it the same way nor will it be explained in the same manner. Since there are differences of opinion as to what “quality of life” actually is a working definition for this paper should be established. Therefore the definition I will be working with will be as follows it is a very complex multidimensional concept consisting of a personal evaluation process. The multidimensional process is life satisfactions; positive and negative, health; psychological well-being and social well-being, and both aspects together.…
