The moral and ethical issue behind medically preformed abortions has been and will always be one of the most controversial issues in medicine. Medically performed abortions have been legally performed since 1973with the Supreme Court ruling in the cases Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton (Guttmacher, 2015). Before the high courts ruling, women could only receive an abortion through illegal channels. This meant visiting unregulated abortion clinics and in some cases women where forced to visit back alley butchers that used dangerous douching solutions or knitting knifes and coat hangers to perform the procedures (OBOS Abortions Contributors, 2014). According to the Guttmacher Institute “45 states allow individual providers and 42 states allow institutions the right to refuse to perform abortions” (Gurrmacher Institute, 2015). In addition, “ 11 states restrict coverage of abortions in private insurance plans, limiting coverage to only when a women 's life is in danger” (Gurrmacher Institute, 2015). It is the belief of NARAL Pro-Choice America that laws made to protect the right to refuse effects the health care options of women. Furthermore, they also believe that women of color and those the live below the poverty line or effected the most by these laws (NARAL,2015). NARAL also believes that these women already have a mountain of discriminatory factors against them and that the refusal laws add one more obstacle for them to over come (NARAL, 2015). I believe that if a doctor refuses to preform an abortion because it goes against his/her moral or religious belief they shouldn’t be obligated to perform the service, but instead she refer the patient to a doctor that would perform the service. Family Planning Programs preform safe and affordable abortion and offer educational programs in contraceptives and sexual health classes. In conclusion, health care providers constantly face ethical and moral decisions. Some are easy black and white decisions, and other may cause them to question their moral and ethical beliefs. Healthcare providers are held at a high stander and regard. Their expected to save lives and repair injuries on a daily basis, what we all most remember is that physician are human and that they’re not exempt from facing their own conscience and living with decisions that they
