His diagnosis compelled me to want to help people such as Will, and additionally sparked my interest in neurology and the pathology of the brain. From a young age, I knew that was what I wanted to study. Reading books about the anomalies of the brain, I learned about phantom limbs, amnesias and agnosias; so many pathologies that seemed like science fiction but were real things that could be studied and treated. That enthusiasm and sense of wonder to learn about the brain and other scientific phenomena never ceased- I recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience while continuing to tutor subjects in chemistry, biology, and physics. But while my love for science and learning about the way we function at a microscopic level has been a factor in my choice to go into medicine, it is not the primary reason. For as interesting as I find the study of proteins, cells, and organ systems that make us who we are, it is learning about people- their hopes, desires, fears, their stories- that makes being a physician a rewarding and exciting
