Considering that most single mothers do not have a degree in any field, or did not attend any higher education, their choices are fairly limited. Despite this, most single mothers in the United States have the ability to read and write. Therefore, clerical jobs such as accounting clerks, receptionists, and medical record clerks are all jobs that require a minimal amount of skill. Though entry-level clerical jobs do not pay very much, gaining experience in this field could potentially result in a job position with the potential for growth. Some of these companies include Whole Foods, Starbucks, Uhaul, and Staples. Considering this, there are an array of jobs surrounding the career fields of retail. Naturally, one of these positions is likely to be suitable for a single mother who does not want to commit to a full time job, and would receive insurance as long as it is from a company that provides it. The main problem with this is that the minimum wage is not yet equivalent to a living wage. Therefore, even if a mother were to work full time in the field of retail, it would not yield a sufficient amount of income to provide for both herself and her child. Despite this, some single mothers receive child support from the father.
