“Medical marijuana refers to the use of cannabis or marijuana, including constituents of cannabis, THC and other cannabinoids, as a physician-recommended form of medicine or herbal therapy.” (USLEGAL, n.d.). Ten states have legalized the use of medical marijuana so far, with California being the first. Along with providing help to patients going through chemo and other therapies, medical marijuana is also effective in treating patients with epilepsy and other neuropathy diseases. The use of marijuana dates back to 2737 B.C. The emperor of China, Shen Neng, used cannabis tea as a treatment for gout, rheumatism, and malaria. The drug spread quickly as a popular medicine in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and India. In the early 18th century, American medical journals recommended hemp seeds and roots to provide a treatment for a variety of conditions such as …show more content…
Smoking is the most common, but you can also do so by taking a pill, using oral sprays, or by eating edibles. Research has shown that when medical marijuana is taken in the form of a pill, it has proved to be effective in “reducing stiffness in muscle spasm” (Zimmermann, 2014). A common use of medical marijuana is to relax the symptoms of nausea that uproar from chemotherapy and other intense therapies that patients have to go through. There are “two FDA-approved cannabis-based drugs, dronabinol and nabilone, that have been shown to reduce chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting in cancer patients” (Zimmermann, 2014). Marijuana can also be used to “treat muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis, nausea from cancer chemotherapy, poor appetite and weight loss caused by chronic illness, such as H.I.V, or nerve pain, seizure disorders, and Crohn’s disease” (Harding, 2013).
