Richard N. Gottfried has been the chair of the Health Committee Assembly since 1987, and represents the 75th Assembly District. He is a leading policy maker nationwide but mostly involved in New York State. He was elected in the year 1970, while he was a student as Columbia Law School. He has worked to fight stronger protections for healthcare consumers and health care providers and has shown public support for universal access to quality affordable healthcare. Mr. Gottfried has done a lot for the State of New York; he has been the leading advocate of patient autonomy. Marijuana plant can help treat symptoms and help with some severe diseases. FDA has only approved it for two drugs and wants more research and clinical trials on human subjects to truly determine the benefits and risks of future medications. In the United State’s we have ethical debates for the legalization of medical marijuana. Even today so many States are still deciding the overall beneficence of therapeutic marijuana. Non malfeasance is ethical term that says do no harm, and for medical marijuana the focus is on possible side effect that some argue will end up harming then doing any good to someone. Many individuals fought using autonomy to legalize medical marijuana while some value paternalism. Paternalism this term means to protect those that lack the understanding for what’s right for their well being (Nelson, 2007). FDA still has not enough evidence aside from few cases where this drug does seem to alleviate symptoms; it is unsure as to what the possible side effects can be from this and requires more research to be done on medical …show more content…
Governor Cuomo signed the bill to pass this as the law for those in critical conditions. The Bill allowed emergency access to qualified individuals to receive care with medical marijuana and gives them protection from the authorities (Nyt, 2015). To get the bill approved many individuals rallied outside the Governor’s office. Many parents begged the Governor to past the bill to help their sick children with life threatening seizures. Even after the bill was passed still many individuals could not use the drug and many died trying to fight to have access. Individuals believe that many are suffering and waiting for their marijuana drug to help with their ill conditions. Richard N. He was discussing the matter with Governor Cuomo for months to help him make the decision of allowing this bill to get accepted. He used the example of medical marijuana helping so many children with epilepsy in other states. The main reason why this bill was passed in New York State was because of the increasing demand of medical marijuana for children suffering from epileptic seizures. The Legal aspect for medical marijuana only can be cleared if state allows it to be used for those needing it for
