Medical Marijuana Case Study

In 1996, the California government passed a proposition that made the state of California the first in the nation to allow the medical use of marijuana. Since then, a total of 23 states, the District of Columbia and Guam have created all-inclusive communal medicinal marijuana programs ("State Medical Marijuana Laws"). Four states have legalized the recreational use of marijuana; this has had an impact on the overall perception of marijuana ("State Marijuana Laws Map."). The medical benefits of marijuana and its derivatives have proven useful in the treatment of debilitating ailments. The legalization of medical marijuana has had positive effects on society, whether through its medical benefits or its positive economic impacts.

Charlotte was just three months old when she had her first seizure, and it would be another two years until she was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome; a disease which causes intractable seizures that cannot be controlled with medication. Charlotte had been experiencing nearly fifty seizures a day. At one time, Charlotte was on seven different drugs, including barbiturates and other heavily addictive drugs. For years, Charlotte’s parents tried countless drugs and methods to lessen the seizures, but none worked for very long. As her condition worsened, Charlotte began having up to 300 seizures a week. Charlotte’s parents chose to go a route that neither of them had considered before and they decided to seek out a license for medicinal marijuana. They were constantly refused for a medical marijuana license because of Charlotte’s age, but then they came into contact with the Realm of Caring Foundation. The Realm of Caring Foundation provided cannabinoid products, in the form of cannabis oil, to the Figis. Charlotte now takes cannabis oil twice a day with her food. She only needs about three or four milligrams of oil per pound of her weight to stop the seizures. Since Charlotte began taking the oil daily, she has about two or three seizures a month and they mostly occur in her sleep (Young). Many voters are beginning to come around to the idea of legalizing medicinal marijuana in their states. The status of marijuana has also come a long way from where it was when its medicinal qualities were first recognized and legalized. Twenty years ago, marijuana was seen as the gateway drug. Marijuana was thought to be the drug that everyone tried that got them hooked to other, more dangerous drugs. Now, marijuana is used freely in twenty-three states for its medical qualities.
