Medical Marijuana: The Miracle Drug The legalization of marijuana has been a hot topic for the past couple of decades. States have been deciding on whether they should legalize the popular drug or not for years. Twenty-five states and the District of Colombia have legalized medical marijuana. Now why haven’t the other twenty-five states not legalized? Numerous states have the question on their ballot this November. There will always be two sides to every story, but on most stories one side outweighs the other, by a lot. Medical marijuana has been scientifically proven to help ease the pain for specific illnesses; therefore, it should be legalized in all fifty states. Lester Grinspoon, MD, Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, wrote this in an article published in the Boston Globe:
"Doctors and nurses have seen that for many patients, cannabis is more useful, less toxic, and less expensive than the conventional medicines prescribed for diverse syndromes and symptoms, including multiple sclerosis, Crohn 's disease, migraine headaches, severe nausea and vomiting, convulsive disorders, the AIDS wasting syndrome, chronic pain, and many others" (Grinspoon).
Grinspoon, a very educated doctor, is like many other educated men and women who believe that medical marijuana is useful in several different ways.
