Imagine a world where theft is allowed, car accidents are apart of daily life, and people are contracting illnesses left and right. Imagine a world where people are not motivated to do well and mediocrity is accepted. It’s a simple drug that has the ability to cause many problems to a person 's overall health and society as a whole. Presently, this issue has divided the nation into two groups: those who think marijuana is dangerous and those who want it legalized for therapeutic purposes. I believe that Marijuana should be illegal because of its life-threatening and harmful effects toward our health and society.

To this day, people are supporting either prohibition or legalization of marijuana. According to Mitch Earlywine who wrote the book Understanding Marijuana, many of these arguments contain reasons that follow code relevant to morality and law. Marijuana is a lethal drug that can cause harm if addiction and abuse subsides. If cannabis is legal, this will become a common reality amongst many. According to USA Today, four states and D.C. have legalized marijuana for medicinal and recreational use (View Where Marijuana Is Legal). Also, twenty states have legalized just medicinal use. Many states are soon to follow this law due to the amount of tax benefits they’ll receive. If we, as a country. are attempting to be “drug-free” the legalizing isn’t our best option. According to Robert Dupoint of The Seattle Times, “comparing the legalization of Marijuana to legal “drugs” such as alcohol and tobacco is a curious rationale for legalization. If an illegal drug is not causing as many problems as legal drugs, legalizing it will further these problems” (Robert Dupoint). Thirty other states are still enforcing the crackdown of Marijuana. In recent years, Marijuana has been the top cash crop in the U.S. at over 35 million dollars annually (Marijuana Production in the United States). This is just the underground market alone. With prohibition, a downside would be that the dangers of the Black Market would increase. With legalization, the government would promote taxed cannabis untouched with other substances. Currently, marijuana from the black market has the probability to be laced with another substance that can cause further problems. These taxes could generate billions of dollars into our economy and recovery programs.
