In this capstone project, we were expected to discuss a topic relevant to the laboratory in which we deemed important. In the pre-analytical steps that lead to the brainstorming and writing of this capstone project we reflected on how few in numbers or major was and how little others knew of our major. In addition to these facts, we discussed how a recent hospital neglected to include a laboratory in their initial design made us question our importance. After these discussions, we decided that our topic should be based upon who we are as a profession and how we can recruit others interested in the medical laboratory field. In the subsequent pages of this capstone project, we will be discussing what it means to be a medical laboratory scientist, what qualities a person should possess to fit the job description, and the overall make-up of the lab. After the exposure into the world of the …show more content…
There are several paths a person can take to become a laboratory technologist, but the most common path taken in through a four-year university program. These programs typically consist of three years in the classroom and one in the lab gaining hands on experience. Other programs can consist of two years of classroom work and two years in the laboratory. The basic course work is similar in each, which includes such topics as general chemistry and biology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, and statistics. The program can either be strictly university based where real patient samples are not commonly seen, to having a year internship in a hospital where the future technologist will get to appreciate real life samples and situations. No matter how the program is set up they must abide by a strict curriculum established by accrediting agencies, since the student will be expected to pass a certification test at the end of their
