Medical Internship Personal Statement

As a serious, self-starter student, I hope to join NYC Ladders for Leaders and be involved in a challenging yet rewarding medical internship this summer. From mastering the stethoscope in my pediatrician’s office at age five to scoring a lab-coat on my 7th birthday to assisting an ultrasound technician with my mother’s sonograms at age nine, I have always been passionate about medicine. My fierce drive to understand and help others as well as my enthusiasm for science and human rights has led to my involvement in a Science Olympiad and Chistadora’s Manice program as well as several human rights clubs and organizations, including Girls United, the Black Lives Matter Campaign, GLOW (Gay, Lesbian, or Whatever), and a Human Rights clubs. During my time there, I garnered extensive experience in individual and group laboratory research settings, knowledge of national and international health issues, and well-developed research and presentation skills. Besides my work and volunteer history, a semester-away program at the Fieldston School further polished my communications, leadership, and time management skills in addition to instilling me with an intense work ethic and a growth-mindset. If it were not for these opportunities to better myself as both a student and an individual, I would be taking three honors classes next year. I wish to contribute everything I have learned thus far in the program and …show more content…

Mieke Verhaeghe and Piet Bracke (2012) highlighted prior research that suggested that the stigma of mental illness is not only limited to individuals that have mental disorders, rather it also affects mental health providers as well as mentally ill individual’s family members. Their study focused on the effects of the associated stigma amongst mental health professionals and found that associated stigma amongst mental health providers does not only exist but also has detrimental effects as it has a major impact on mental health providers’ emotional wellbeing and job satisfaction which results in depersonalization among providers and their clients which affects the client’s progress and satisfaction. The stand in which the mental health community has taken continues as an inspiration of unconditional positive regard to all humans. Hence, my attraction to the field remains non-judgmental of all those who suffer from a mental illness, an urge to facilitate wellness, a propensity to help teach mindfulness, and an obvious calling for social justice. Continued education will offer me an opportunity to work with diverse clients from a range of cultures. However good my education level remains, I will need to continue to investigate educational programs that offer me opportunities to grow as a professional counselor. My journey has just begun as a helper even though my life experiences are numerous.…

From a young age my mother and best friend recall me acting different from most children. I had a list of ten questions I had to ask every night before going to sleep, and if they were not answered I would make myself physically sick, or wet the bed in fear that those around me would end their lives because I wasn’t capable of getting answers. I had delusions, hallucinations, and sever headaches, which then lead to CAT scans and x-rays to make sure there were no tumors or blockages in my head. It was much later in life that my physician, along with psychologist, realized that I was bi-polar.…
