The United States has a health problem: Nearly 70% of American adults are overweight or obese and half of all adults in the US have one or more chronic health conditions. The US invests more of our GDP on healthcare than any other country and is disproportionately ranked 37th by the World Health Organization compared to other national health care systems. How can we solve our problem and improve health in the US? Family practice and primary care physicians are the key to reversing these trends in health rather than specialists; only in primary care do physicians hold the responsibility of preventing disease and promoting health over the lifetime of patients. My interest in primary care is motivated by a passion for preventative medical education,…

Regardless of what specialty I will end up selecting, I aspire to be more than a physician that only treats people. I am motivated to give back and contribute to my local community as well as healthcare as a whole. As I learn more about the health disparities around the UIC community, the more ideas come to mind on how to tackle these challenges.…

The field is always growing and changing and I yearn to undertake in this lifetime of learning. I find it so exciting that one day I can serve people by improving their health and do so using cutting-edge technologies, some which may have yet to be invented. I may not be able to change the world on the whole, but small actions can have a big influence. I look forward to creating a positive impact on a personal level, treating holistically and compassionately, as this is a career path that calls for an understanding of the human experience as much as it does an understanding of the human body. It is this interplay of science and service that makes medicine so unique, so compelling, and so fit a profession for me to…

As an only child growing up in a middle class family, I learned the value of helping others through my parents. My hard working parents were brought up in Bangladesh, a third-world country in South Asia with devastating poverty. As role models, they reared me in the belief that my goals in life should include lending a helping hand to others. Furthermore, my empathy for others has encouraged me to aid those in need.…
